what does and 1 mean in basketball
In basketball, “and-1” refers to a situation where a player is fouled while successfully making a basket. The term is short for “and one more” and implies that the player will be awarded one additional free throw as a result of the foul.
Here’s how it works:
1. A player is fouled while attempting a shot and still makes the basket.
2. The player is then given one free throw to complete the play.
3. If the player makes the free throw, they score one more point, hence “and-1” (the basket plus one free throw).
For example, if a player makes a layup and is fouled, they would get the chance for one free throw to convert the “and-1.”
